Flat Rock is a premier dive site located off North Stradbroke Island near Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. This beginner-friendly rocky reef system is one of the most popular dive destinations in southeast Queensland, known for its reliable encounters with leopard sharks, manta rays, and a diverse community of subtropical marine life. Flat Rock is a submerged rocky platform that rises from the sandy seabed to within a few meters of the surface, creating a substantial reef structure in the open waters of Moreton Bay Marine Park. The rock is surrounded by sandy expanses, making it a natural aggregation point for marine species that seek the shelter, food, and cleaning station opportunities the reef provides. The site is particularly famous for its population of leopard sharks (zebra sharks), which rest on the sandy bottom around the rock in significant numbers during the warmer months. These beautiful, spotted sharks are docile and approachable, allowing divers to observe them at close range. Manta rays visit the site regularly, using the cleaning stations on the rock to have parasites removed by small cleaner fish and shrimp. These encounters with large, charismatic marine species are the primary draw for many divers. Beyond the headline species, Flat Rock supports a rich subtropical ecosystem. Grey nurse sharks aggregate here seasonally. Wobbegong sharks rest beneath ledges. Schools of trevally, kingfish, and sweetlip animate the water column. The rock surfaces support colorful sponge and coral growth, and the nooks and crannies harbor moray eels, octopus, and nudibranchs. Conditions at Flat Rock are generally suitable for all certified divers, though the exposed position means checking weather and sea conditions is important. Visibility ranges from 8 to 20 meters, with the best clarity during calm weather. Water temperatures range from 19 to 27 degrees throughout the year, with the warmest months bringing the best shark and ray activity. Flat Rock is southeast Queensland's jewel - a marine life hotspot that delivers world-class encounters within easy reach of Brisbane.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
