Shag Rock is a popular dive site located in the waters of Moreton Bay Marine Park off the Gold Coast and North Stradbroke Island in southeast Queensland, Australia. This beginner-friendly rocky reef offers excellent subtropical diving with reliable marine life encounters just a short boat ride from one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations. The site consists of a series of rocky reef formations that create habitat structure on the sandy seabed. The rocks range from low-profile platforms to larger boulder formations, with gutters, ledges, and small overhangs creating varied terrain that supports diverse marine communities. The position of the reef in the open waters of the bay ensures good water circulation and nutrient delivery. Shag Rock is known for its healthy population of grey nurse sharks that aggregate in the area, particularly during winter and spring months. These critically endangered sharks are impressive in size but entirely harmless to divers, and watching them hover in the current with their ragged teeth on display is a powerful experience. Wobbegong sharks are also common residents, draped over the rocks in their characteristic camouflage. The reef supports a colorful community of subtropical species. Sponges, soft corals, and gorgonian fans decorate the rock surfaces, while schools of trevally, sweetlip, and snapper circle the formations. Octopus, cuttlefish, and nudibranchs provide excellent macro subjects, and the sandy areas between rocks may yield encounters with various ray species. Conditions at Shag Rock are generally manageable for certified divers, with moderate depths and usually gentle currents. Visibility ranges from 5 to 15 meters depending on weather and sea conditions, with the best clarity during calm periods. Water temperatures are subtropical, ranging from 19 to 26 degrees throughout the year, making diving comfortable in a standard wetsuit for most of the season. Shag Rock offers accessible and rewarding diving that showcases the best of southeast Queensland's marine environment, with grey nurse shark encounters adding a world-class wildlife dimension.
