Henry Head is a rewarding intermediate-level dive site located at the entrance to Botany Bay in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. With depths reaching 26 meters, this exposed headland site offers dramatic underwater topography and diverse marine life in the temperate waters where Botany Bay meets the open Tasman Sea. The site features a rocky coastline that continues below the surface as a series of walls, boulders, and reef formations. The underwater topography is characterized by gutters, swim-throughs, and deep channels carved into the sandstone by centuries of wave action. These geological features create a complex three-dimensional environment that rewards exploration and provides habitat diversity for a wide range of marine species. Henry Head benefits from its position at the junction of bay and ocean waters. Nutrient-rich currents flowing past the headland support a productive ecosystem. The rocky walls are covered in sponge gardens, ascidians, and various encrusting organisms that create a colorful tapestry in shades of orange, yellow, and purple. Gorgonian fans and sea whips extend from the rock faces into the current, particularly on the deeper walls. The marine life is diverse and often impressive in numbers. Wobbegong sharks are commonly spotted resting beneath ledges, while Port Jackson sharks inhabit the deeper gutters. Large blue groper, a signature species of Sydney's waters, approach divers with characteristic boldness. Schools of old wife, mado, and bullseye provide mid-water spectacle, while cuttlefish and octopus hunt among the rocks. During seasonal migrations, grey nurse sharks may pass through the area. The intermediate rating is well-deserved. The site is exposed to open ocean swell and can experience significant surge near the surface. Current can develop around the headland, and the depth demands attentive air management. Calm conditions and slack water are preferred for the best diving experience. Visibility ranges widely from 5 to 20 meters depending on recent weather and sea conditions. Water temperatures follow Sydney's temperate pattern, from about 16 degrees in winter to 23 degrees in summer. Henry Head is an excellent choice for experienced Sydney divers seeking a site that combines dramatic topography with the diverse marine life of the New South Wales coastline.
