The Monument is a beginner-friendly dive site at Kurnell in Botany Bay, Sydney, named for its proximity to the Captain Cook landing monument on the headland above. With depths to 14 meters, this shore-accessible site offers a slice of Sydney's vibrant temperate reef ecosystem in a historically rich setting. The underwater terrain features sandstone reef formations extending from the shore into the bay. Walls, gutters, and boulder fields create a complex reef structure that supports diverse marine communities. The sandstone has been shaped by wave action into interesting formations, including small overhangs and swim-throughs that add adventure to the dive. Marine life at The Monument is prolific for a metropolitan dive site. The reef walls are blanketed in colorful sponge gardens, with orange, yellow, and purple encrusting species competing for space alongside sea squirts and bryozoans. Blue groper patrol their territories with characteristic confidence, while eastern blue devilfish add dramatic color from their hiding spots in the reef. Wobbegong sharks camouflage themselves beneath ledges, providing a thrill for divers who spot them. Schools of mado, old wife, and yellowtail animate the water column. Cuttlefish are frequently encountered, and the attentive diver may spot seahorses and pipefish clinging to sponge growth on the reef. Octopus are resident in the area, often betrayed by the midden of shell fragments outside their dens. Shore access is straightforward, and the proximity of the reef to the entry point minimizes surface swimming. Currents within the bay are typically gentle, and the depth profile allows divers to choose their comfort level. These factors combine to make The Monument an excellent site for building experience after initial certification. Visibility ranges from 5 to 15 meters, with the best clarity during calm conditions and outgoing tides. Water temperatures follow the Sydney seasonal range of 16 to 23 degrees. The Monument offers reliable, diverse temperate diving in a location steeped in Australian maritime history.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
