The Steps is a popular shore dive site located at Kurnell on the southern side of Botany Bay in Sydney, New South Wales. With a maximum depth of 15 meters, this beginner-friendly site gets its name from the concrete steps that provide convenient entry into the water, making it one of the most accessible dive sites in the Sydney region. The underwater landscape at The Steps features a series of sandstone reef platforms and boulder formations that extend outward from the rocky shoreline. Channels, gutters, and small walls create a varied topography that rewards exploration at every depth level. The reef structure provides excellent habitat diversity, with different zones supporting different communities of marine organisms. The marine life here is characteristic of Sydney's rich temperate reef ecosystem. Dense sponge gardens carpet the rock surfaces in brilliant colors, while sea tulips and cunjevoi add vertical dimension to the reef. Blue groper are almost guaranteed on every dive, their bold, inquisitive nature making them the unofficial welcoming committee of Sydney dive sites. Wobbegong sharks lurk beneath ledges, eastern blue devilfish peer from crevices, and Port Jackson sharks are seasonal visitors to the deeper gutters. The mid-water is animated by schools of yellowtail and sweep, while cuttlefish display their mesmerizing color changes over the reef. Nudibranchs of various species provide endless interest for macro enthusiasts, and the occasional eagle ray passing through deeper water adds a moment of excitement. The Steps is an ideal site for newer divers thanks to the easy entry via the concrete stairs, manageable depths, and generally calm conditions within the bay. The reef is close to shore, meaning minimal surface swimming is required. Navigation is intuitive, with the reef structure providing clear reference points. Visibility averages 5 to 12 meters, improving during calm weather and outgoing tides. Water temperatures range from 16 degrees in winter to 23 degrees in summer. As one of Sydney's most beloved shore dives, The Steps consistently delivers enjoyable diving for all levels in a convenient and accessible package.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
