South Channel off the Belize coast is an advanced shallow dive through a natural channel cut in the barrier reef at only 8 meters depth. Despite the shallow depth, this site earns its advanced rating through powerful tidal currents that rush through the narrow passage. When the timing is right, the channel becomes a superhighway for marine life — large tarpon, schools of snappers, and nurse sharks all use this natural corridor. The current brings nutrients that support dense soft coral growth on the channel walls. Drift diving with the tide provides an exhilarating ride through one of Belize's most dynamic underwater environments.
