La Burrera is a beginner dive site on Lanzarote's southern coast, its name drawing from the island's pastoral landscape heritage — 'burrera' relates to the donkey traditions of the Canary Islands, where these animals were historically essential for agriculture and transport on the volcanic terrain — and applied to a dive site that delivers the character of the southern coast in accessible, beginner-friendly conditions. Lanzarote's southern coast offers the island's most reliably calm diving conditions, protected from the prevailing northeast trade winds by the island's central highland and providing the gentle, warm-water environment that suits those early in their diving experience. La Burrera sits within this protected zone, its depth range and sea state reflecting the sheltered quality that makes the southern coast so popular for resort diving. The dive unfolds on volcanic basalt formations characteristic of Lanzarote's underwater coastline, the rock colonised by the encrusting community appropriate to these warm, clear southern waters. The sponge and anemone community on the basalt surfaces provides the visual interest of the reef, while the sandy patches between formations host the invertebrate life that beginner divers most frequently encounter: stingrays resting partially buried, the occasional angel shark providing a genuinely memorable encounter in the flat, open substrate between reef formations. Fish life at La Burrera includes the typical Canarian southern coast assemblage: large schools of bogues and bream in open water, the endemic wrasse species moving through the basalt, and the dusky grouper that occupy territorial positions on the reef's prominent structures with the relaxed confidence of well-protected animals. Loggerhead sea turtles are regular foragers along this section of the Lanzarote coast, and their reliable presence adds the warmth of an encounter with a large, ancient marine reptile to a dive that is already thoroughly enjoyable in its own right.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
