Mala Acantilado Derecho — the right-hand cliff of Mala — is an intermediate dive at the village of Mala on Lanzarote's northeast coast, exploring the right face of the volcanic cliff that descends into the Atlantic at this exposed, productive section of the island's most windward shore. This is Lanzarote diving with a different character from the sheltered southern sites: more Atlantic, more current-influenced, and with the wildlife encounters that productive, exposed water typically generates. Mala is a small, traditional Canarian village on the northeast coast, set against the dramatic inland landscape of Lanzarote's volcanic terrain. The village's coastal access provides entry to dive sites that are less visited than the Puerto del Carmen and Papagayo zones, giving them a wilder, less managed character. The northeast coast faces the prevailing Atlantic trade winds, and conditions here are more variable than in the south — the right-hand cliff dive at Mala requires intermediate experience to navigate the conditions comfortably. The volcanic cliff descends into the Atlantic in the angular, layered fashion typical of Lanzarote's basalt formations, its face encrusted with the organisms that flourish in the productive, current-swept water of the northeast coast. Sponge communities here are denser than at comparable sheltered sites, the nutrient-rich water supporting the filter-feeding organisms that build reef complexity. Sea anemones cover the cliff face in clusters, and the endemic Canary Islands wrasse species are conspicuous throughout the dive. The current that runs along the northeast coast creates the productive conditions that attract larger fish: schools of Atlantic horse mackerel sweep past in tight formations, amberjack patrol the cliff face at mid-depth, and large dusky grouper occupy the deeper crevices of the cliff with territorial assurance. An intermediate dive with the raw Atlantic character of Lanzarote's most exposed coast.
