Punta de Jameos del Agua is an intermediate dive at one of Lanzarote's most extraordinary geological locations — the headland where the island's famous Jameos del Agua lava tube cave complex meets the sea. The Jameos del Agua tourist attraction conceals within it the entrance to the Túnel del Atlántico, the world's longest known submarine volcanic tunnel, and this dive explores the underwater extension of that geological wonder at recreational depths. Jameos del Agua is a system of volcanic caves formed when an ancient lava flow created a tunnel that eventually reached the sea. The freshwater-to-saltwater transition zone within the cave system hosts the famous Munidopsis polymorpha — a blind white crab that lives only in this cave and has become one of Lanzarote's most iconic species, a remarkable example of island endemism in the extreme environment of an underwater cave. The dive at Punta de Jameos del Agua does not enter the cave system itself but explores the headland's underwater terrain where the geological forces that created the cave are expressed in the volcanic formations of the submerged coastline. The intermediate nature of the site reflects its position on the more exposed coast north of Puerto del Carmen, where the prevailing Atlantic conditions create more variable diving than the sheltered southern sites. The volcanic basalt formations around the point descend in the layered, angular pattern typical of Lanzarote's north coast, the rock colonised by the encrusting community that flourishes in the productive Atlantic-influenced water. The geological context of Jameos del Agua adds an intellectual dimension to the dive: you are exploring the seaward face of a geological system of genuine world significance, the lava tube that extends from this headland into the island's interior representing one of the most extraordinary volcanic formations in the Canary Islands. Large grouper, moray eels, and the schooling fish that favour the productive north coast make the wildlife encounters commensurate with the geological interest.
