Sea Fan Reef is an advanced dive on the Great Astrolabe Reef off Kadavu, Fiji, named for the extraordinary forest of gorgonian sea fans that grows along the reef wall. Giant fan corals, many exceeding two metres across, stand in dense ranks perpendicular to the current, creating a mesmerizing underwater landscape. The fans harbour pygmy seahorses, longnose hawkfish, and crinoids in vibrant colours. The reef drops steeply into blue water where grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and schooling tuna patrol. Strong currents fuel the fan growth but demand confident buoyancy and drift diving skills. Sea Fan Reef ranks among Kadavu's most spectacular and photographically rewarding sites.
