Rio de Janeiro Maru is a beginner-friendly wreck dive in Truk Lagoon, Chuuk, Micronesia, featuring a 140-metre Japanese armed transport ship converted from a former passenger liner. The ship's grand staircase and passenger-era features are still visible beneath the coral growth, giving this wreck a unique character among Truk's military fleet. The upper decks sit in shallow water, accessible to less experienced divers, while deeper exploration reveals artillery guns mounted on the bow and stern. The wreck has become a thriving artificial reef with exceptional coral coverage and abundant fish life. Rio de Janeiro Maru bridges Truk Lagoon's wartime history with traces of the vessel's elegant peacetime past.
