Les Patates is a deep-water coral mound field off Port-Louis, sitting at 35 to 46 metres on the sand. The large bommies that give the site its name host the fauna that specialises in this depth zone: huge barrel sponges, gorgonian fans, and deep-reef fish that rarely come up to recreational depth. Eagle rays pass through regularly and occasional reef sharks cruise the sand. PADI Advanced Open Water with Deep specialty is the honest minimum. Nitrox 32 transforms the dive by giving you back meaningful bottom time and a safer ascent margin. Best in the dry season, December through May.
