El Aguila is one of Roatán's premier advanced wreck dives, featuring a deliberately scuttled cargo vessel resting at 30 meters on a sandy bottom. The 60-meter ship was sunk in 1997 to create an artificial reef, and the marine colonization has been spectacular. The intact superstructure is draped in soft corals, sponges, and sea fans, while the interior shelters large green moray eels, nurse sharks, and schools of glassy sweepers. Eagle rays and southern stingrays are regularly spotted on the surrounding sand, making El Aguila a must-dive on any Roatán diving itinerary.
