Area Perlindungan Laut (APL), meaning Marine Protected Area, is a managed reef zone near Pramuka Island in Jakarta's Thousand Islands archipelago where conservation efforts have resulted in healthier coral growth and more abundant marine life. The reef slope descends from 5 to about 28 meters with improved hard coral coverage thanks to protection from fishing and destructive practices. Schools of sweetlips, snappers, and fusiliers congregate around the coral formations, while hawksbill turtles visit periodically. The protected status has allowed juvenile fish populations to flourish, creating a noticeably livelier reef compared to unprotected areas nearby. Nudibranchs, flatworms, and various macro subjects reward patient observers. The site demonstrates the positive impact of marine protection even in waters near a major city, making it both an enjoyable dive and an inspiring example of coral reef conservation within the Pulau Seribu Marine National Park.
