Barracuda Point at Kakaban Island is one of the signature dive sites of the Derawan archipelago in East Kalimantan, famous for its massive tornado-like schools of chevron barracuda that spiral in mesmerizing formations. The reef point juts into the channel where currents concentrate nutrients and attract schooling fish in spectacular numbers. Beyond the barracuda vortex, the site hosts grey reef sharks, white-tip reef sharks, giant trevally, and schools of surgeonfish and fusiliers. The reef is covered in healthy hard and soft corals with gorgonian fans and barrel sponges, while the deeper sections offer chances for pelagic encounters. Kakaban Island itself is famous for its landlocked marine lake containing stingless jellyfish—a unique natural wonder that adds to the area's appeal. Moderate to strong currents make Barracuda Point best suited for intermediate to advanced divers, with the barracuda spectacle alone worth the journey to this remote corner of Borneo.
