Big Fish Country is an aptly named dive site in the Derawan Islands of East Kalimantan, where the nutrient-rich waters of the Celebes Sea attract impressive concentrations of large pelagic species. The site features a coral reef channel where currents converge, creating a gathering point for barracuda, trevally, and reef sharks that patrol in impressive numbers. Manta rays are frequent visitors during the plankton-rich months, and whale sharks occasionally pass through these productive waters. The reef itself features healthy coral coverage with schooling batfish and sweetlips, while the sandy bottom hosts blue-spotted stingrays and garden eels. Despite its name suggesting only large species, the reef also supports excellent macro life. Currents can be strong, making it an advanced dive, but Big Fish Country consistently delivers the exciting pelagic encounters that have made the Derawan archipelago one of East Kalimantan's premier diving destinations.
