Blue Magic, in Raja Ampat's Dampier Strait, is one of the top three dive sites in the world's most biodiverse marine region — a submerged pinnacle rising from 30 meters to within 5 meters of the surface, positioned in a high-current channel that attracts oceanic manta rays, grey reef sharks, and the full pelagic cast of the Bird's Head Seascape. The site's combination of reliable big-animal encounters and world-class coral cover makes it the single most requested dive on Raja Ampat liveaboard itineraries. The pinnacle is oriented east-west and dived as a drift along its flanks and top. Mantas use the current-swept top (5-10 meters) as a cleaning station, arriving singly or in groups and often lingering for 10-20 minutes. Oceanic mantas with 6-meter wingspans and reef mantas with distinctive markings are both common here. Grey reef sharks patrol the pinnacle's deeper flanks, and schools of bigeye trevally, barracuda, and dogtooth tuna swirl in the blue off the pinnacle's edge. Coral cover is extraordinary. The pinnacle is blanketed in staghorn and table corals, soft corals in electric pink and purple, and gorgonian fans that reach two meters across. Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, and hawksbill turtles cruise the pinnacle, while macro life on the coral heads includes pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and a range of shrimps and gobies. Blue Magic is strictly Advanced Open Water — currents regularly exceed two knots, up-and-down flows occur, and the dive is a committing drift. Reached by liveaboard or speedboat from Kri-area resorts (45-60 minutes). Visibility 15-30 meters, water temperatures 27-29°C. Best season runs October through April; manta encounters are possible year-round but peak in December-March when plankton-rich currents concentrate around the pinnacle.
