Sardine Reef is a legendary dive site in the Dampier Strait of Raja Ampat, named for the immense schools of sardines and silversides that form swirling bait balls in the blue water. The site features a coral reef slope descending to 30 meters where the nutrient-rich currents of the strait concentrate extraordinary numbers of fish—the sardine schools attract predators including trevally, mackerel, and barracuda that launch spectacular hunting attacks. The reef itself boasts pristine hard and soft coral coverage with wobbegong sharks resting under table corals, Napoleon wrasse cruising past, and reef sharks patrolling the edges. Schools of sweetlips, batfish, and surgeonfish add to the overwhelming density of marine life. Moderate currents make Sardine Reef accessible to intermediate divers, while the sheer scale of the fish action consistently ranks it among Raja Ampat's most exciting and memorable dive experiences.
