Cape Kri, in the heart of Raja Ampat's Dampier Strait, holds the official world record for fish species observed on a single dive — 374 species counted by ichthyologist Gerry Allen in 2012 — and is widely regarded as the single most biodiverse dive site on the planet. The cape juts into the tidal strait between Kri and Mansuar islands, where nutrient-rich waters from the Pacific and Indian oceans collide to fuel an ecosystem of almost unbelievable density. The dive is a drift along the cape's sloping reef, beginning at 5 meters on the reef top and descending to 30-35 meters on the southern wall. The current carries divers past a procession of hard and soft corals, gorgonian fans, and sea whip colonies, while massive schools of fusiliers, batfish, and bannerfish shimmer overhead. The cape's famous 'fish tornadoes' — swirling vortexes of jackfish, barracuda, and snappers — are routine on any full drift dive here. The biodiversity defies normal description. Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, and hawksbill turtles patrol the reef; whitetip, blacktip, and grey reef sharks appear on virtually every dive; and the site supports a rich population of pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, shrimps, and other macro life for patient observers. Wobbegong sharks rest beneath table corals, and epaulette sharks ('walking sharks') appear on night dives. Cape Kri is an Advanced Open Water dive — currents can exceed three knots, depths reach 30+ meters, and the drift is committing. Reached by liveaboard or Sorong-based dive resort speedboat (45 minutes from Kri Eco Resort). Visibility 15-30 meters, water temperatures 27-29°C. Best season runs October through April, with November-December delivering the most predictable currents and best pelagic action.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
