Doro is an advanced dive site in the Atauro channel, where a complex reef formation descends to 40 meters through a series of ridges, overhangs, and swim-throughs carved by powerful tidal currents. The topography creates sheltered pockets where soft corals and sea whips flourish in remarkable density, painting the reef in vivid colors even at depth. Schools of surgeonfish and fusiliers ride the current along the ridges, while Napoleon wrasse and groupers lurk beneath the overhangs. The deeper sections reveal pristine black coral forests and large gorgonian fans oriented perpendicular to the current flow. Doro's combination of complex terrain and consistent current makes it a challenging but deeply rewarding dive for experienced divers exploring the frontier waters of eastern Indonesia, where underwater encounters remain refreshingly unpredictable.
