Melissa's Garden, in Raja Ampat's Fam Islands, is one of Indonesia's most beautiful coral gardens — a shallow reef complex of coral bommies and sandy channels surrounding three small limestone karst islands, where some of the densest and most diverse hard-coral communities in the world are accessible to divers of every level. The site is a photographer's paradise and a showcase for the extraordinary coral biodiversity that has earned Raja Ampat the title of 'the epicenter of marine biodiversity.' The dive typically explores a shallow bommie field at 5-18 meters, where coral heads the size of buses rise from the sand, each covered in a mosaic of hard corals, soft corals, gorgonian fans, and feather stars. The diversity of coral species here is staggering — over 500 species of hard corals alone have been documented in Raja Ampat, and Melissa's Garden displays a representative selection of the region's best. Sandy channels between the bommies host garden eels, stingrays, and the occasional resting shark. Marine life is rich and varied. Napoleon wrasse and bumphead parrotfish cruise the edges, reef sharks and eagle rays pass through, and the bommies host pygmy seahorses (Bargibant's and Denise's), a full range of nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish, and anemones with clownfish and cleaner shrimps. The shallow top of the bommies hosts schooling batfish, fusiliers, and snappers, and sunlight penetrates the reef with remarkable clarity thanks to the sheltered location. The dive is accessible to Open Water divers thanks to its shallow depth and generally mild currents. Reached by liveaboard (typically on Waigeo-northern itineraries) or speedboat from Waisai (60-90 minutes). Visibility typically 15-25 meters, water temperatures 27-29°C. The site dives well year-round, though the October-April peak season offers the calmest seas and best conditions.
