Il Grottone — the Great Grotto — is an advanced cave dive site within the Tavolara Marine Protected Area in northeast Sardinia. This massive cavern, reaching 35 meters depth, is one of the largest underwater grottos in the central Mediterranean. The entrance is a grand archway in the granite cliff face, wide enough for multiple divers, opening into a cathedral-like chamber where shafts of natural light create an otherworldly blue glow. The cave ceiling is adorned with geological formations, while the walls host colonies of red coral, encrusting sponges, and delicate hydroids. Large groupers often shelter in the grotto's depths, and lobsters can be spotted in the darker recesses. The site's grandeur and relatively easy navigation make it accessible to advanced open-water divers, not just cave specialists, though proper briefing on overhead environments is essential.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
