Eagle Ray Rock is an advanced deep dive on Grand Cayman's west coast, where a coral-encrusted pinnacle rises from 30 metres depth to attract spotted eagle rays and other pelagic species. The site earns its name from the reliable presence of these graceful creatures, whose diamond-shaped silhouettes gliding through the blue water create some of the most iconic images in Cayman diving. The rock formation sits slightly offshore from the main wall, creating a standalone structure that acts as a waypoint for marine life moving between the deeper ocean and the reef. The pinnacle's exposed position in the water column means it receives current from multiple directions, bringing nutrients that support lush growth of sponges and soft corals on every surface. Spotted eagle rays are the main attraction, often encountered in groups of two to five individuals as they cruise past the rock on their regular patrol routes. Their distinctive pattern of white spots on dark dorsal surfaces, combined with their effortless flight-like swimming motion, makes them one of the most photogenic species in Caribbean waters. The rays are most commonly sighted during the morning hours, particularly during the cooler winter months when they tend to stay in shallower water. The rock itself is worth exploring independent of the eagle ray encounters. Barrel sponges of impressive size anchor to the formation, while deep-water sea fans extend their branches into the current. Groupers of various species have established territories around the base of the rock, and jacks patrol the perimeter in silvery schools. The sandy bottom surrounding the pinnacle regularly produces sightings of Southern stingrays and nurse sharks. The 30-metre depth limits bottom time on recreational dives, and the exposed position can mean stronger currents than at wall-adjacent sites. Dive operators use mooring buoys for easy descent and ascent, with safety stops conducted on the shallow reef nearby. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres at this site, with water temperatures between 26 and 29 degrees providing comfortable diving year-round.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
