The Wreck of the Cali is a shallow, beginner-accessible wreck dive off George Town harbour on Grand Cayman's west coast. Resting at just 7 metres depth, this small cargo vessel has become one of the most popular introductory wreck dives in the Caribbean, offering a non-intimidating first wreck experience in the warm, clear Cayman waters. The Cali was a 70-foot freighter that sank in the 1940s and has since been largely broken down by decades of storms and marine growth. What remains is a spread of wreckage that retains enough structure to be recognisable as a ship while posing minimal entanglement hazards. The low profile and shallow depth make it safe for newly certified divers and even supervised discover scuba diving participants. Despite its modest size and deteriorated condition, the Cali has developed into a thriving artificial reef. The remaining hull plates and structural members are completely encrusted with marine growth including fire coral, sponges, and various hard coral species. This bio-cover has attracted a remarkable concentration of marine life for such a small wreck, with more species per square metre than many larger, deeper wrecks. The wreck's residents include a friendly population of moray eels that peer from openings in the hull, their gaping mouths less threatening when you understand they are simply breathing. Schools of grunts and snappers gather in the shadows created by remaining structure, while parrotfish crunch on coral growing on the hull. Octopuses have claimed territories among the wreckage, and patient observers may spot them changing colour as they move between hiding spots. The Cali is typically dived in combination with the nearby Balboa wreck, with boats positioning between the two sites. The shallow depth allows long bottom times, often 60 minutes or more, giving divers ample opportunity to explore every corner of the wreckage. With visibility commonly exceeding 20 metres and warm temperatures year-round, the Cali provides a charming and accessible introduction to the world of wreck diving.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
