Hospital Reef is a beginner-friendly dive site in Trincomalee's harbour area in northeastern Sri Lanka, reaching just 10 metres over a gentle reef that takes its name from the nearby military hospital. This shallow, accessible site provides an ideal first dive experience in the Trincomalee area, with calm conditions and surprisingly rich marine life. The reef consists of coral formations on a rocky and sandy substrate, with the gentle slope and minimal current creating conditions suitable for the most novice of certified divers. The shallow maximum depth allows for extended bottom times, giving beginning divers ample opportunity to practice skills and observe marine life without the pressure of limited air supply. Coral coverage is developing well, with various hard coral species establishing on the stable substrate. The shallow depth ensures excellent light penetration, promoting vigorous coral growth and making the reef's colours vivid and photogenic. Soft corals and sponges add variety to the coral community. Marine life at Hospital Reef includes a healthy population of colourful reef fish. Damselfish, wrasses, and butterflyfish animate the coral formations, while small groupers and moray eels occupy the rocky crevices. The reef's proximity to the harbour provides nutrient enrichment that supports productive food chains, resulting in more fish per unit area than might be expected for a beginner-level site. The sheltered harbour position means Hospital Reef is diveable on days when offshore sites may be too rough, providing a reliable backup option for dive operations. Night diving is also popular here, with octopuses, crabs, and nocturnal fish providing a completely different experience after dark. The east coast diving season runs from April to September, with visibility of 8 to 15 metres and water temperatures around 28 to 30 degrees. Hospital Reef is a welcoming introduction to Trincomalee diving.
