Navy Island Cave

Navy Island Cave is an advanced dive site in the Trincomalee area of northeastern Sri Lanka, where an underwater cave system at 12 metres depth provides dramatic overhead environment diving. Despite the shallow depth, the cave's confined spaces and navigational complexity firmly establish this as an advanced dive requiring specific skills and experience. The cave system is formed within the rocky structure of Navy Island, with an entrance accessible from the open reef leading into a series of interconnected chambers. The main chamber is large enough for multiple divers, with a ceiling high enough to avoid claustrophobic sensations. Smaller passages branch off from the main chamber, some leading to secondary openings that allow natural light to penetrate. Natural light filtering through openings creates atmospheric lighting conditions within the cave, with shafts of illumination cutting through the blue darkness. This interplay of light and shadow makes the cave a rewarding photographic environment, though a dive torch is essential for exploring the darker recesses and appreciating the colours of the encrusted walls. The cave walls are covered in encrusting organisms adapted to low-light conditions, including sponges, tunicates, and small soft corals. The colour palette is different from the sun-lit reef outside, with deep reds, purples, and oranges dominating. Marine life within the cave includes lobsters, sleeping nurse sharks (occasionally), and various species of shrimp that thrive in the protected environment. The advanced rating reflects the overhead environment, navigational requirements, and the importance of maintaining precise buoyancy to avoid disturbing sediment on the cave floor. Only divers with proper overhead environment training should enter the deeper cave sections. The diving season runs from April to September, with visibility inside the cave generally good if divers manage their fin technique carefully. Navy Island Cave offers Trincomalee's most dramatic overhead diving experience.
