Navy Island is an advanced dive site off Trincomalee harbour in northeastern Sri Lanka, where a small island's underwater terrain creates complex diving conditions at a modest 12-metre depth. The advanced rating stems not from depth but from the strong currents, variable visibility, and exposed conditions that characterise this harbour-adjacent location. The underwater landscape around Navy Island features rocky formations descending from the island's shore into the harbour waters. The rocks create walls, overhangs, and boulder fields that provide substantial habitat diversity within a compact area. The island's position in the harbour entrance means it is exposed to tidal currents flowing in and out of Trincomalee's natural deep-water harbour. These strong currents make Navy Island a dynamic and challenging dive, with water movement that can change direction and intensity during a single dive. The upside of this current exposure is the concentration of marine life it creates, with the nutrient-rich water supporting impressive populations of fish and invertebrates. Marine life at Navy Island includes large groupers that have benefited from reduced fishing pressure in the naval security zone. Schools of snappers, fusiliers, and trevally patrol the current-swept waters, while reef fish including wrasses, butterflyfish, and angelfish animate the reef. The harbour's historical use as a military base means occasional encounters with submerged artifacts and structural remnants. The advanced rating demands respect for the tidal conditions, with dives carefully timed to coincide with the most manageable current phases. Surface support must be alert to changing conditions, and divers should carry surface marker buoys. The diving season runs from April to September, with visibility ranging from 5 to 15 metres depending on tidal and weather conditions. Water temperatures average 28 to 30 degrees. Navy Island rewards experienced divers with encounters that benefit from the site's unique harbour position.
