The Navy Underwater Dive Museum and Wreck is a unique advanced dive site in Trincomalee harbour, Sri Lanka, where the Sri Lanka Navy has created an underwater museum and artificial reef at 23 metres depth. This innovative site combines marine conservation with military heritage, offering divers an unusual experience that blends artificial structures with developing natural reef ecology. The underwater museum features a collection of military equipment, structures, and artifacts placed on the seabed by the navy to create both a diving attraction and an artificial reef. Vehicles, weaponry, and naval equipment are arranged on the sandy bottom, creating an underwater exhibition that is fascinating to explore. A deliberately sunk naval vessel provides the centrepiece, its hull and superstructure offering wreck penetration opportunities. Marine colonisation of the museum exhibits has been rapid in Trincomalee's productive waters. The metal and concrete structures are developing coatings of coral, sponge, and algae growth that are gradually transforming the military hardware into living reef. Fish have adopted the structures as habitat, with groupers claiming territories within vehicle interiors and schools of reef fish aggregating around the larger exhibits. The wreck element of the site provides classic wreck diving experiences, with accessible compartments and swim-throughs that allow exploration of the vessel's interior. The ship's structure creates dramatic frames for photography, with marine growth softening the harsh lines and natural light filtering through openings. The advanced rating reflects the 23-metre depth, overhead environments within the wreck, and the harbour's variable current and visibility conditions. The site requires proper planning and experienced dive support. The diving season runs from April to September, with visibility ranging from 5 to 15 metres in the harbour waters. Water temperatures average 28 to 30 degrees. This site offers a genuinely unique diving experience that showcases Sri Lanka's creative approach to marine tourism.
