Klathipa Deep Dive Site is an advanced deep dive off Trincomalee in northeastern Sri Lanka, plunging to 40 metres in the clear waters of the Indian Ocean. This site pushes the boundaries of recreational diving and is frequented by experienced divers seeking the thrill of deep exploration in Trincomalee's famously clear waters. The underwater terrain at Klathipa features a rocky slope descending from shallower reef into genuinely deep water. The slope is punctuated by large boulders, ledges, and overhangs that provide interest and reference points during the descent. The geological formations at depth reveal layers of rock that speak to the region's tectonic history. The deep environment at Klathipa harbours marine species adapted to the reduced light and cooler temperatures found below 30 metres. Large gorgonian sea fans of impressive size extend from the deeper rock faces, their growth undisturbed by the storm activity that affects shallower sites. Barrel sponges of considerable age and diameter occupy stable positions on the formation. Deep-water marine encounters are the site's primary draw. Large groupers, sometimes of exceptional size, inhabit the deeper overhangs where they have found refuge from fishing pressure. Reef sharks patrol the deeper zones, and during the right conditions, hammerhead sharks have been sighted at this site. Schools of barracuda and trevally are commonly encountered in the mid-water column during descent and ascent. The 40-metre depth severely limits bottom time on air, and many visiting divers use nitrox or trimix to extend their exploration. The cold thermocline layer frequently encountered at depth demands appropriate thermal protection. Careful gas planning and decompression awareness are essential. The diving season at Trincomalee runs from April to September, with visibility at depth sometimes exceeding 25 metres in the clear east coast waters. Klathipa represents the deep diving frontier of Sri Lankan recreational diving.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
