The Submarine Tunnel is an advanced dive site near the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, where a Cold War-era military submarine tunnel has been transformed into one of the Adriatic's most unique diving experiences. Reaching 18 metres, this man-made underwater structure offers a diving experience unlike any natural site, combining military history with atmospheric overhead environment diving. The tunnel was constructed during the Yugoslav era as a concealed submarine base, designed to shelter military submarines from aerial detection and attack. The massive concrete-lined tunnel penetrates deep into the coastal rock, with an underwater entrance large enough to have accommodated full-size naval vessels. Today, this extraordinary piece of Cold War infrastructure is accessible to divers who meet the advanced certification requirements. Entering the tunnel from the Adriatic is a dramatic experience, with the underwater entrance framing a view of gradually diminishing natural light as divers penetrate deeper into the structure. The concrete walls of the tunnel create smooth surfaces that contrast with the natural rock formations visible where the man-made structure meets the geological substrate. The scale of the construction is impressive, emphasizing the strategic importance once placed on this facility. Marine life has colonised the tunnel's interior, with organisms adapted to low-light and sheltered conditions. The tunnel's walls support sponges and tunicates, while fish species shelter within the protected environment. The transition zones at the entrance, where natural light gives way to darkness, are particularly biodiverse. The advanced rating reflects the overhead environment, the need for dive lights, and the navigational awareness required within the tunnel. Divers should be comfortable in enclosed spaces and maintain precise buoyancy to avoid disturbing sediment on the tunnel floor. Visibility inside the tunnel is generally good if divers manage their movement carefully. The site is accessible from May to October, with water temperatures ranging from 15 to 24 degrees.
