Hondoq is a beginner-friendly shore dive on Gozo's southeast coast in Malta, accessed from the beach at Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay. This convenient entry point leads to a varied underwater landscape that showcases Mediterranean marine life at accessible depths. The shore entry from the sandy beach is one of the easiest on Gozo, with a gentle wade into the shallows before the bottom drops away over rocky terrain. The reef extends outward from the bay, with the depth increasing gradually over a mixed terrain of rock, sand, and Posidonia seagrass beds. The seagrass meadows at Hondoq are a highlight, with extensive beds of Posidonia oceanica creating an underwater prairie that sways gently in the light surge. These seagrass beds are among the most important marine habitats in the Mediterranean, serving as nursery grounds for juvenile fish, feeding areas for sea horses, and carbon storage systems. The health of Hondoq's seagrass beds reflects the overall good water quality around Gozo. Beyond the seagrass, rocky reef sections support the full range of Mediterranean reef life. Wrasses of several species work the rock surfaces, while blennies peer from tiny holes with characteristic curiosity. Octopuses are common, and the patient observer may spot cuttlefish hovering above the reef. Schools of bream and salema move through the area, and groupers occupy the larger crevices. The bay's sheltered position and gentle profile make it ideal for training dives, night dives, and relaxed exploration. The night diving here is particularly rewarding, with octopuses on the hunt, sleeping parrotfish, and bioluminescent organisms adding sparkle to the water. Visibility at Hondoq typically exceeds 20 metres, with water temperatures from 15 to 26 degrees. This friendly site delivers reliable, enjoyable Mediterranean diving directly from the shore.
