Santa Marija Cave on Comino Island is an advanced dive site where a large sea cave creates one of the most atmospheric overhead environment experiences in the Maltese archipelago. Located near the Santa Marija Battery on Comino's northeast coast, this cave system combines geological drama with rich marine life in Malta's crystalline waters. The cave entrance opens at moderate depth along Comino's limestone cliffs, leading into a spacious chamber that extends deep into the rock. The main chamber features a high ceiling and an air pocket where divers can surface, creating the cathedral-like atmosphere that Malta's caves are famous for. Secondary passages branch from the main chamber, offering more challenging exploration. Natural light effects within the cave are spectacular, with sunlight entering through the underwater entrance and reflecting off the sandy bottom to illuminate the chamber in shifting blue tones. The contrast between the bright Mediterranean outside and the atmospheric blue interior creates powerful visual experiences. The cave walls support colourful marine growth including sponges, false coral, and tunicates. Shrimps and crabs inhabit the darker recesses, while the cave entrance zones attract groupers and moray eels. Schools of small fish shelter within the cave's protection. The advanced rating reflects the overhead environment, the navigational awareness required, and the depth of the deeper passages. Dive lights are essential for exploring beyond the naturally lit main chamber. Visibility in Malta's waters typically exceeds 30 metres, with cave interiors maintaining excellent clarity when divers manage their movement carefully. Santa Marija Cave is one of Comino's most rewarding dive sites.
