The MV Karwela is one of Malta's premier wreck dives, a 50-metre former passenger ferry deliberately sunk off Gozo's southeast coast in 2006 to create an artificial reef and diving attraction. Resting upright on a sandy bottom, this wreck provides outstanding penetration diving in Malta's legendary crystal-clear waters. The Karwela sits at depth with her superstructure rising substantially from the seabed, creating an impressive profile visible from the surface on calm days. The vessel was thoroughly prepared before sinking, with hazardous materials removed, multiple access points created, and guidelines installed in key areas. The resulting dive site is one of the Mediterranean's best-prepared wreck dives. The wreck's multiple decks offer diverse exploration opportunities. The bridge area retains its navigational equipment, providing atmospheric photographic subjects. The passenger saloons, with their wide corridors and open doorways, create accessible penetration routes. The engine room represents the wreck's deepest and most technically demanding area, rewarding advanced divers with impressive machinery and the moody atmosphere of the vessel's mechanical heart. Marine colonisation has transformed the Karwela into a productive artificial reef. Sponges, tunicates, and algae coat every external surface, while fish populations have adopted the wreck enthusiastically. Damselfish, bream, and wrasses school around the superstructure, while groupers and moray eels inhabit the interior spaces. Barracuda occasionally circle the wreck. The advanced rating reflects the depth and extensive overhead environments within the wreck. Malta's consistent visibility, often exceeding 30 metres, ensures safe navigation and spectacular wide-angle photography. The MV Karwela sits adjacent to the Cominoland wreck, allowing ambitious divers to visit both on a single dive. Water temperatures range from 15 to 26 degrees. This wreck is essential Gozo diving.
