The Cominoland Wreck is an advanced dive site off Gozo in Malta, where a deliberately sunk ferry rests on the seabed near the Xatt l-Ahmar area. This wreck, scuttled as an artificial reef to enhance the local diving, provides an accessible wreck penetration experience in the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters that Malta is famous for. The MV Cominoland was a passenger ferry that served the route between Malta and Comino before being prepared and sunk as a diving attraction. The vessel sits upright on the sandy bottom, with its hull and superstructure largely intact. The preparation for sinking included creating multiple entry and exit points, removing hazardous materials, and securing loose equipment. The wreck's superstructure provides multi-level exploration opportunities, from the external deck areas to the bridge, passenger saloons, and engine room. Natural light floods through the prepared openings, illuminating the interior and creating a welcoming environment for wreck penetration. Malta's legendary visibility, often exceeding 30 metres, means the entire wreck is visible during descent, creating an impressive first impression. Marine colonisation is developing on the wreck's surfaces, with sponges, tunicates, and algae establishing on the hull and deck structures. Fish have adopted the wreck as habitat, with damselfish, wrasses, and bream congregating around the structure. Groupers and moray eels have taken up residence in the wreck's interior spaces. The advanced rating reflects the depth and the overhead environments within the wreck's interior. Divers should have wreck diving training or experience before attempting penetration of the deeper interior spaces. The Cominoland sits near the MV Karwela, allowing experienced divers to visit both wrecks on a single dive. Visibility is consistently excellent year-round. Water temperatures range from 15 to 26 degrees.
