Red Bay is an advanced dive site near Xatt l-Ahmar on Malta's Gozo island, where the bay's distinctive reddish limestone gives both the area and the dive site their name. The underwater landscape continues the geological drama visible on shore, with red-tinted rock formations creating a uniquely coloured Mediterranean diving experience. The reef at Red Bay extends from the shore into deeper water, with the distinctive reddish limestone creating a warmer colour palette than the pale grey limestone typical of most Maltese dive sites. The geological interest is enhanced by erosion features, fault lines, and layered rock faces that tell the story of the archipelago's formation. The underwater terrain features walls, boulder fields, and reef formations that drop into deeper water at the bay's outer edge. Overhangs and small caves provide sheltered habitats, while the more exposed surfaces support current-tolerant organisms. The proximity to the Karwela and Cominoland wrecks means the reef benefits from the spillover of marine life concentrated around the artificial structures. Marine life at Red Bay includes the full range of Mediterranean reef species. Groupers inhabit the overhangs, moray eels peer from crevices, and octopuses display their camouflage skills among the red-tinted rocks. Schools of bream and salema patrol the reef edge, while wrasses and blennies work the rock surfaces at every depth. The advanced rating reflects the depth at the outer sections, the potential for current, and some areas of complex terrain that demand good navigation. The bay itself provides sheltered conditions near shore, but the advanced diving lies at the outer reaches. Visibility at Red Bay is excellent, typically exceeding 25 metres. Water temperatures range from 15 to 26 degrees. Red Bay offers a geologically unique diving experience in the heart of Gozo's most popular diving area.
