The Karwela and Cominoland wreck field at Xatt l-Ahmar off Gozo's southern coast is one of the Mediterranean's most remarkable dive sites, where two deliberately scuttled vessels rest in close proximity on a sandy seabed at a maximum depth of thirty-eight meters, creating an underwater landscape that combines the appeal of wreck diving with the efficiency of exploring multiple wrecks in a single dive. This double wreck site is a testament to Malta's commitment to creating world-class artificial reefs for the diving community. The MV Karwela, the larger and more popular of the two, is a former passenger ferry stretching roughly sixty meters in length. She sits upright and intact, her superstructure rising from the sand like a ghostly vessel frozen in time. The Cominoland, a smaller ferry, rests nearby, her form equally recognizable despite the increasing marine growth that is gradually absorbing both vessels into the Mediterranean ecosystem. The proximity of the two wrecks allows experienced divers to visit both in a single dive, swimming across the sandy gap between them to experience two completely different vessel types. The Karwela's multiple decks provide extensive exploration opportunities. Her bridge retains recognizable navigation equipment, the passenger salons reveal the spaces where travelers once crossed between the islands, and the engine room contains impressive machinery that speaks to the vessel's working life. Marine life has enthusiastically adopted every space — schools of fish fill the interior corridors, octopuses occupy sheltered corners, and the walls are increasingly covered in the sponges and corals that mark the vessel's transformation from ferry to reef. The Cominoland offers a different experience — her smaller size creates a more intimate exploration, and her particular structural features provide their own photographic opportunities and marine encounters. The space between the two wrecks has become a transit zone for fish moving between the artificial reefs, and the sandy seabed itself supports flatfish, rays, and the occasional foraging octopus. Gozo's legendary visibility ensures that both wrecks can often be seen simultaneously from mid-water, creating panoramic underwater vistas that are simply unavailable at wreck sites in murkier waters. The Karwela and Cominoland together offer a wreck diving experience of exceptional variety and quality, making this site an absolute must-dive for anyone visiting Gozo with advanced certification.
