Blue Hole at Dwejra is Gozo's crown jewel of advanced diving, where the famous limestone chimney opens through a spectacular archway into the open Mediterranean and descends to depths that reveal the full grandeur of this extraordinary geological formation. While the shallow portions of the Blue Hole captivate beginners, it is at depth that this site truly reveals its most breathtaking secrets — vast caverns, dramatic swim-throughs, and encounters with larger marine species that make this one of Europe's finest dives. The advanced dive typically begins with a descent through the chimney to the great archway at around fifteen meters, where the passage opens to the outer reef face. Passing through this natural cathedral is one of diving's most photogenic moments — the arch spans roughly eight meters across and frames the deep blue Mediterranean beyond, while silhouettes of other divers crossing the threshold create timeless images. Once through, the exterior wall drops away dramatically, plunging past thirty meters and beyond into the depths where the ancient limestone has been sculpted into an intricate maze of ledges, overhangs, and vertical fissures. The deeper sections of the outer wall harbor marine life that is seldom seen in the shallows. Large dusky groupers haunt the cave entrances at depth, their massive bodies gliding slowly through the shadows. Barracuda patrol the blue water beyond the reef edge, and during autumn months, greater amberjack arrive in impressive schools that sweep past the wall in silvery waves. The rock face itself is adorned with colonies of yellow cluster anemones, false black coral, and delicate bryozoans that create living tapestries on every surface. Experienced divers can extend their exploration to the remains of what was once the Azure Window, Gozo's famous natural arch that collapsed into the sea in 2017. The massive boulders from the collapse now form an artificial reef system teeming with life, creating new swim-throughs and sheltered areas that are rapidly being colonized by marine organisms. This evolving underwater landscape adds a fascinating dimension to the dive, combining geological drama with ecological succession in real time. The chimney itself takes on a completely different character during ascent, when the play of light from above creates an almost mystical atmosphere. Looking upward from depth, the circular opening frames the sky like a natural spotlight, and the walls seem to glow with an ethereal blue luminescence. Advanced divers often use this ascent for their safety stop, hovering in the chimney while schools of fish spiral above them in the shaft of light. The Blue Hole at advanced depth is a dive that defines Mediterranean exploration — technically demanding enough to test experienced divers while delivering rewards that justify every moment of the descent into its magnificent depths.
