Cueva de Coral at Dwejra is an advanced cave diving experience that takes divers deep into the limestone cliffs of Gozo's most famous diving area, exploring a spacious cavern system adorned with some of the richest marine growth found anywhere in the Maltese islands. Located adjacent to the legendary Blue Hole and Inland Sea, this cave offers a complementary diving experience that reveals yet another dimension of the extraordinary Dwejra underwater landscape, reaching depths of twenty-eight meters within its atmospheric passages. The approach follows the familiar Dwejra coastline, descending along the reef toward the cave entrance in the cliff base. The mouth of the cave is generous — wide enough for comfortable entry and sufficiently illuminated by natural light to ease the psychological transition from open water to enclosed space. As you cross the threshold, the cave walls close in and the character of the dive shifts unmistakably. The ambient sounds of the open sea fade, replaced by the intimate acoustics of a subterranean space where your own breathing becomes the dominant sound. The cave's namesake coral growth is genuinely spectacular. Dense colonies of golden cup corals cover the walls and ceiling in profusion, their delicate polyps fully extended in the calm, sheltered water. When illuminated by torchlight, these formations blaze with a warm amber glow that transforms the cave into an underground gallery of natural art. Interspersed among the corals are sponges of extraordinary size and color, colonial tunicates in gem-like clusters, and the intricate spiral structures of tubeworms that retract at the slightest disturbance. The cave extends considerably into the cliff, with the main passage opening into chambers of varying size. The largest rooms can accommodate several divers simultaneously, their ceilings arching overhead in natural vaults that echo the architecture of the churches above ground for which Gozo is equally famous. Cardinal fish inhabit these spaces in dense schools, and the careful observer will spot lobsters, shrimp, and nudibranchs among the cave's permanent residents. Cueva de Coral within the Dwejra complex offers advanced divers the chance to combine this cave experience with dives at the Blue Hole and Inland Sea, creating a trilogy of interconnected sites that showcase the full range of Gozo's geological and marine diversity. The cave itself is a place of genuine wonder — a hidden chamber beneath the cliffs where the Mediterranean has created something approaching art, and where the patient diver is rewarded with sights that exist nowhere else above the waves.
