Fungus Rock rises from the sea at the entrance to Dwejra Bay on Gozo's west coast, a massive limestone islet steeped in history and surrounded by underwater terrain that makes for fascinating beginner-friendly diving. Known locally as Il-Gebla tal-General, this imposing rock was once fiercely guarded by the Knights of Malta who believed a rare fungus growing on its summit possessed miraculous healing properties. Today, the waters around its base offer a different kind of treasure — accessible, beautiful diving in one of Gozo's most scenic settings. The dive typically begins from the sheltered waters of Dwejra Bay, with a short surface swim toward the rock bringing you over progressively deeper terrain. The seabed around Fungus Rock is a mosaic of sand patches, scattered boulders, and low reef formations that create a varied and interesting landscape for exploration. The gentle slope allows beginner divers to control their depth comfortably while having plenty to observe at every level. Visibility in these waters is characteristically excellent, often reaching twenty-five meters or more, which means the entire underwater landscape is visible in stunning clarity. The base of Fungus Rock itself is encircled by tumbled boulders that have fallen from the islet over centuries, creating a necklace of miniature habitats around the formation. These boulder fields are magnets for marine life — octopuses establish dens in the gaps between rocks, moray eels occupy the deeper crevices, and schools of bream drift among the formations in silvery clouds. The rocks are covered in a living quilt of algae, sponges, and encrusting organisms that give every surface texture and color. Swimming along the sheltered eastern side of the rock, beginners can explore an area where the cliff face drops more steeply into the water, offering a taste of wall diving without the depth commitment. Here, the rock is pierced by small cavities and recesses where light plays beautifully against the pale limestone, and cardinal fish hover in loose aggregations just inside the entrances. The Posidonia seagrass beds nearby support their own community of marine residents, including cuttlefish, juvenile fish of numerous species, and the fascinating spider crabs that move deliberately among the blades. Fungus Rock combines accessible diving with a genuinely compelling location — the views from the surface alone, with the massive rock towering above and the dramatic Dwejra coastline stretching away on either side, create a setting that elevates the entire dive experience. For beginners exploring Gozo for the first time, this site offers a perfect introduction to the island's underwater character, delivering easy conditions, rich marine life, and the kind of atmospheric surroundings that transform a simple dive into a memorable adventure in one of the Mediterranean's most storied locations.
