HMS Stubborn is an advanced wreck dive off Malta's northwest coast, where a World War II British S-class submarine rests on the Mediterranean seabed. Scuttled after the war as part of naval demobilisation, this submarine wreck provides one of Malta's most unique and atmospheric diving experiences. The submarine lies on the sandy bottom, her distinctive cigar-shaped hull creating an immediately recognisable profile. The conning tower, deck gun mounting, and hydroplane structures add detail to the silhouette. The vessel's compact, streamlined form looks strikingly purposeful even decades after her operational career ended. HMS Stubborn had a distinguished wartime record, conducting patrols in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Far East. Her role in Malta's waters was part of the British submarine campaign that wreaked havoc on Axis supply lines, contributing significantly to the Allied victory in North Africa. Diving this submarine is a direct encounter with one of the most effective weapons of the Mediterranean naval war. Marine life has colonised the submarine extensively. The hull supports sponges and tunicates, while the various protrusions and structures shelter fish. Groupers have taken up residence near the conning tower, and schools of bream and damselfish frequent the area. The submarine's smooth hull surfaces provide excellent substrate for photography against the blue Mediterranean backdrop. The advanced rating reflects the depth and the historical sensitivity of the site. The submarine should be treated with respect as a piece of maritime heritage. Penetration is not recommended given the confined interior spaces and structural deterioration. Visibility at the site typically exceeds 25 metres. HMS Stubborn is one of the Mediterranean's most evocative submarine wreck dives.
