The Imperial Eagle and Statue of Christ form one of Malta's most unique dive experiences, combining a substantial shipwreck with an underwater religious monument in a single dive that blends maritime history with spiritual atmosphere. Located off Qawra Point on Malta's northeastern coast, the former ferry Imperial Eagle was deliberately scuttled near a large bronze statue of Jesus Christ, creating a dive site that attracts both wreck enthusiasts and those drawn to the contemplative beauty of the underwater shrine. The Imperial Eagle was a passenger and car ferry that served the Malta-Gozo route before being decommissioned and sunk as an artificial reef. She rests upright on a sandy seabed, her hull intact and her superstructure clearly defined. The wreck has matured beautifully since her scuttling, with marine growth covering every surface and transforming the vessel into a thriving artificial ecosystem. Schools of bream congregate around the superstructure, damselfish defend territories on the hull, and larger predatory species patrol the perimeter with the confidence of established residents. The bridge and upper deck areas are accessible for exploration, revealing the layout of a working ferry with passenger spaces, navigation equipment, and the characteristic features of a Mediterranean inter-island vessel. The interior spaces are penetrated by natural light through windows and hatches, creating atmospheric conditions that make interior exploration both safe and visually stunning. Every corridor and compartment has its own marine residents — cardinal fish fill the darker spaces, octopuses occupy sheltered corners, and the walls are decorated with sponges and cup corals. A short swim from the wreck brings you to the Statue of Christ, a substantial bronze figure standing on the seabed with arms raised in blessing. The statue is a powerful presence underwater — its serene expression and dramatic pose create a contemplative moment that contrasts beautifully with the industrial character of the nearby wreck. Marine growth has begun to soften the statue's features, adding a patina of organic texture that enhances rather than diminishes its impact. Fish congregate around the figure, and the interplay of light on the bronze surface creates an almost mystical quality. The combination of wreck and statue in a single dive creates an experience unlike any other in Malta. The dive offers genuine variety, meaningful exploration, and moments of quiet beauty that elevate it beyond standard wreck diving. Whether you are drawn by the history of the Imperial Eagle, the spiritual resonance of the underwater Christ, or simply the excellent marine life that both structures support, this site delivers a dive of exceptional character and lasting impact.
