La Madonna at Cirkewwa is one of Malta's most recognizable and emotionally resonant dive sites, where a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary stands on the seabed at twenty-five meters depth, creating an underwater shrine that has become a symbol of Maltese diving culture. Located off the northern headland near the Gozo ferry terminal, this intermediate-depth site combines the spiritual impact of the underwater statue with excellent reef diving and proximity to Cirkewwa's other famous attractions. The descent to La Madonna follows the gently sloping reef from the Cirkewwa shore entry, passing over the familiar shallow reef before the terrain drops more steeply toward the statue's location. As depth increases, the reef becomes more dramatic — larger rock formations appear, overhangs develop, and the marine life becomes noticeably more abundant. The anticipation builds as you approach the known location, scanning the reef for the first glimpse of the statue that has graced countless dive photographs and magazine covers. The Madonna statue stands approximately three meters tall, positioned on a rocky pedestal with her arms extended in a gesture of welcome and blessing. The figure is beautifully crafted, and despite the marine growth that has begun to colonize her surface, her features remain clear and her posture retains its full emotional impact. Encountering the statue for the first time is a genuinely moving experience — the combination of the figure's serene expression, the deep blue water surrounding her, and the silence of the underwater world creates a contemplative moment that transcends religious affiliation. The reef surrounding La Madonna is excellent diving in its own right. The rocky terrain at this depth supports a diverse marine community including moray eels, octopuses, and various species of wrasse and bream. Scorpionfish lie camouflaged on the rocks, and the larger overhangs shelter groupers that have grown accustomed to passing divers. The proximity to the deeper Rozi and P29 wrecks means that marine life migrating between these artificial and natural reefs passes through the area, adding the possibility of unexpected encounters. La Madonna at Cirkewwa is more than just a dive site — it is a place of genuine meaning within Malta's diving community, visited by divers of all nationalities who find something personally significant in the experience of encountering this beautiful figure in her underwater sanctuary. Whether approached as a spiritual experience, a photographic opportunity, or simply an excellent intermediate dive, La Madonna delivers a uniquely Maltese underwater experience that resonates long after you return to the surface.
