Middle Finger is one of Gozo's lesser-known underwater gems, a striking rock formation rising from the seabed between Comino and the western coast of Gozo that rewards curious divers with an experience far removed from the island's more crowded sites. The dive takes its playful name from the distinctive pinnacle that juts upward from the reef, a geological curiosity shaped by millennia of Mediterranean currents and erosion that never fails to bring a smile to divers discovering it for the first time. The site sits in waters that remain remarkably calm for much of the diving season, making it an excellent choice for beginners looking to explore beyond the typical shore entries. A gentle descent from the boat brings you to the top of the reef system, where the namesake rock formation stands prominently against the blue water backdrop. The surrounding terrain unfolds as a series of stepped limestone ledges adorned with patches of Neptune grass and encrusting organisms that paint the rock in subtle shades of orange and violet. Swimming around the base of the pinnacle reveals a world of hidden detail. Small cavities and overhangs shelter cardinal fish and blennies, while painted combers patrol the edges of the rock with their characteristic bold stripes. Octopuses are frequent residents here, often spotted tucked into crevices with only their watchful eyes visible. The relatively shallow depth profile means natural light floods the entire dive, creating wonderful conditions for photography and allowing divers to linger comfortably while exploring every nook of the formation. The reef extending away from the main pinnacle deserves equal attention. Broad plates of limestone create natural swim-throughs at various points, and fields of Posidonia oceanica sway gently between the rocky outcrops. These seagrass meadows are vital nursery habitats, and observant divers may spot juvenile wrasse, damselfish, and even small cuttlefish hovering among the blades. During summer months, the warm surface waters attract schools of bogue and salema that circle lazily above the reef crest. Middle Finger is typically accessed by boat from Gozo's southern harbors, with the short crossing adding to the sense of adventure. Dive centers on both Gozo and Comino include this site in their regular rotation, though it sees far fewer visitors than the famous Blue Hole or Inland Sea, giving it a wonderfully uncrowded atmosphere. The calm conditions and moderate depth make it suitable for newly certified divers while still offering enough interest to engage experienced explorers. Whether you are building your logbook or simply seeking a relaxed dive with genuine character, Middle Finger delivers a uniquely Maltese underwater experience that perfectly captures the charm and geological drama of this extraordinary archipelago.
