Baía do Porto Santo is an advanced dive site in the waters off Porto Santo Island — the smaller and less-visited companion island to Madeira in the Portuguese Atlantic archipelago, located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Madeira and known above water for its nine-kilometer golden sand beach and below water for a marine environment of surprising richness and exceptional clarity. Porto Santo's diving has remained somewhat in the shadow of Madeira's better-developed dive industry, but the island's clear Atlantic waters, diverse volcanic topography, and productive marine community have attracted increasing attention from divers seeking a less-crowded alternative to Madeira's established sites. The bay diving at Porto Santo reveals the character of the island's marine environment: volcanic rock formations colonized by the Atlantic reef community typical of the Macaronesian archipelago, clear blue water with visibility often exceeding 20 to 30 meters, and the fish diversity of a relatively undisturbed Atlantic island ecosystem. Large Atlantic grouper occupy structural features with the confidence of animals in a lightly fished environment. Schools of bream and various Atlantic fish species orbit the reef formations. Mediterranean moray eels inhabit the lava crevices. The occasional loggerhead turtle passes through — Porto Santo lies within the Atlantic turtle migration corridor. The advanced rating reflects the depth potential of Porto Santo's bay diving and the exposed Atlantic conditions that can develop in the island's offshore waters. Access from Porto Santo town's marina with local dive operators who have detailed knowledge of the island's diverse underwater terrain.
