Molhe de Fora is a beginner-accessible dive site at Porto Santo Island — the outer mole or breakwater of Porto Santo's harbor, whose submerged structure provides the hard substrate and shelter that concentrates marine life in the otherwise sandy and sediment-influenced harbor environment. Molhe means breakwater or jetty in Portuguese, and de fora (outside/outer) indicates the seaward face of the structure — the section exposed to the cleaner, clearer Atlantic water beyond the harbor's influence. Harbor breakwaters and jetties are productive dive sites precisely because the artificial structure they introduce to the seafloor provides the hard substrate for encrusting organisms to colonize and the structural complexity that concentrates fish. The outer face of Porto Santo's breakwater descends into clear Atlantic water with the diversity of encrusting life typical of Atlantic port structures: various sponges, sea anemones, and encrusting coralline algae colonize the stone and concrete in overlapping layers, while the crevices and spaces in the structure shelter fish, invertebrates, and the Mediterranean moray eels that inhabit any suitable rocky environment in Madeiran waters. Wrasse species — the characteristic cleaner and forager wrasses of Atlantic rocky reefs — work the encrusted breakwater surface continuously. Various sea bream species school around the structure. The torpedo ray, one of the Macaronesian islands' most interesting electrical predators, is occasionally encountered resting against the breakwater base. The calm water on the harbor side and the relatively clean Atlantic water on the outer face create contrasting microhabitat zones within a single accessible dive that beginners can explore thoroughly.
