Baixa do Chinês is a dive site off Porto Santo Island in the Madeiran archipelago — an underwater shoal or low-lying reef formation in the clear Atlantic waters surrounding this golden-sanded companion island to the better-known Madeira. The Portuguese term baixa refers to a shoal, sandbank, or submerged reef — a feature that creates diving interest by providing relief and hard substrate on an otherwise open seafloor, concentrating marine life in ways that flat sandy bottom cannot. The Chinês designation likely refers to a historical connection, navigation name, or local tradition associated with this particular reef feature. Porto Santo's marine environment is characterized by excellent water clarity — the island's position in the open Atlantic, away from mainland coastal influence, ensures the blue, clear water that makes visibility here consistently impressive. The volcanic rock substrate of the shoal is colonized by the Atlantic reef community typical of the Macaronesian islands: encrusting organisms, sea fans, and the diverse fish community adapted to this mid-Atlantic environment. Large grouper and Atlantic barracuda are reliably encountered at Porto Santo's shoal sites. Various bream and wrasse species work the reef surface. The Mediterranean moray eels that inhabit all Madeiran and Porto Santo reef crevices are present throughout. The relatively undeveloped character of Porto Santo's diving, compared to the more touristic Madeira, gives these sites a quieter, more exploratory character that appeals to divers seeking Atlantic island diving without the crowds of more established dive destinations in the region.
