Baixa das Bicudas — the Barracuda Shoal — is an advanced dive site off Porto Santo Island in the Madeiran archipelago, named with characteristic directness for the schools of Atlantic barracuda that aggregate at this underwater shoal (low-lying reef) in the clear waters of Porto Santo's marine environment. The barracuda — great barracuda and Atlantic species — are among the most impressive and reliably encountered predators in Madeiran and Porto Santo waters, and a site named specifically for them promises the kind of dramatic open-water encounter that advanced divers travel specifically to experience. The shoal structure rises from deeper water to provide the concentrated hard substrate and current patterns that attract and hold schooling barracuda: hovering in tight formations in the current shadow of the reef with their silvery torpedo-bodies reflecting the Atlantic light, schools of twenty, fifty, or even a hundred barracuda create one of the ocean's most viscerally impressive wildlife spectacles. The reef itself features the volcanic formation character of Porto Santo's underwater topography, with encrusting organisms, sponges, and sea fans colonizing the hard substrate. Large grouper occupy the deeper structural features. Various Atlantic reef fish work the shoal surface. The advanced designation reflects the depth of the shoal and the current exposure that both creates the productive conditions attracting the barracuda and requires experience to manage safely. Access by boat from Porto Santo town, with local dive operators who time their trips to the barracuda shoal with tide and current conditions that optimize the encounter.
