Southwest is an intermediate dive site off the southwestern coast of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, reaching twenty-eight meters depth at a rocky reef that offers some of the island's deeper and more current-influenced diving. This site provides a step up from the sheltered bays, attracting intermediate divers who want to explore Koh Tao's more dynamic underwater environments. The underwater terrain features granite boulders and reef formations that extend from the island's southwestern point into deeper water. The exposure to open Gulf currents means this site receives more water movement than the eastern bays, bringing nutrients that fuel vigorous marine growth and attract larger fish species. The current can range from gentle to moderate, providing exciting drift conditions on some dives. Coral coverage is healthy, with hard corals on the shallower sections and soft corals thriving on the deeper, current-swept faces. The twenty-eight meter depth provides access to reef zones where larger groupers, barracuda, and occasionally reef sharks patrol. Schools of trevally and fusiliers are more prominent here than at calmer sites, and the overall fish activity reflects the nutrient enrichment that current exposure brings. The intermediate rating reflects the combination of depth, potential current, and the open-water exposure. Divers need solid buoyancy control and comfort in moving water to make the most of this site. When conditions cooperate, Southwest delivers some of Koh Tao's most dynamic and exciting diving, with marine encounters that reward the additional challenge.
