Blue Heron Bridge — officially located at Phil Foster Park in Riviera Beach, just north of Palm Beach — is one of the most famous and celebrated macro dive sites in the entire United States, a shallow, accessible shore dive that has earned an extraordinary international reputation for the extraordinary diversity and density of cryptic and unusual marine species found beneath its bridge pilings and in the surrounding sandy and rubble habitat. Despite a maximum depth of just 9 meters (about 30 feet) and conditions that seem almost too gentle and protected to generate such spectacular encounters, Blue Heron Bridge consistently produces some of the most memorable and unusual wildlife encounters in Florida diving. The site carries an advanced rating not for depth or conditions but for the level of underwater observation skill required to fully appreciate the site — a diver who can find and identify the cryptic critters at Blue Heron Bridge is demonstrating advanced naturalist knowledge and observation technique. The bridge pilings themselves, heavily encrusted with sponges, tunicates, and coral growth, shelter and attract a remarkable roster of unusual species. Frogfish — the master ambush predators whose remarkable camouflage makes them appear to be part of the sponge growth they inhabit — are reliably found at Blue Heron Bridge in multiple color forms, perched motionless on sponge-covered pilings with their deceptive lure extended. Seahorses — both lined and longsnout species — cling to hydroids and vegetation in the sheltered areas around the bridge. Juvenile forms of numerous species shelter in the enriched habitat beneath the pilings. The surrounding sand flat yields its own remarkable finds: jawfish hovering vertically above their burrows, flounder in expert camouflage, scorpionfish, moray eels, and an endless procession of nudibranchs. Blue Heron Bridge is a mandatory destination for any serious Florida diver — a site that proves extraordinary marine life can thrive in unexpected places.
