Flowers Gardens is a natural reef system in the Palm Beach County offshore zone — a productive section of the Florida Reef Tract in the waters off northern Palm Beach County at approximately 17 meters (about 55 feet) depth that offers advanced divers a quality reef diving experience in the warm, Gulf Stream-influenced Atlantic waters of this section of the Southeast Florida coast. The Florida Reef Tract continues northward through Palm Beach County from the famous Florida Keys, and while the reef formations become less continuous and the coral cover less spectacular than the Keys barrier reef, the Palm Beach section of the reef is nonetheless productive and ecologically significant. At Flowers Gardens, the reef structure consists of the limestone ledge and patch reef formations characteristic of Southeast Florida's reef system, with the ledge faces providing overhangs, crevices, and structural complexity that support concentrated fish communities. The Gulf Stream influence here is particularly pronounced compared to more southern sections of the coast — this section of the Florida coastline is close to where the Gulf Stream runs nearest to the beach, bringing warm, nutrient-rich blue water that dramatically improves visibility and introduces pelagic species. Yellowtail snapper are the most reliably abundant fish, hovering in characteristic golden-tailed schools just off the ledge face. Mutton snapper and various grouper species occupy prime structural positions. Goliath grouper make appearances at the site's deeper structural features. The occasional pelagic visitor — cobia, mahi-mahi, or sharks — is facilitated by the site's proximity to the Gulf Stream. Advanced divers exploring the Palm Beach offshore reef system will find Flowers Gardens a productive and characteristically South Florida reef diving experience, with the conditions and species mix that define this section of the coast.
